What is the most durable type of label?
For printed labels, a polyurethane-domed label is the most durable widely available construction. The artwork is printed on polyester or vinyl and then sealed under a thick, clear polyurethane resin dome. Because the print is fully encapsulated, it is waterproof, UV-stable and immune to the scratching, edge-lift and fading that kill flat or laminated labels. Rated -40°F to 180°F.
Are durable labels waterproof and weatherproof for outdoor use?
Yes. Domed labels are 100% waterproof and weatherproof: rain, snow, salt spray, pressure washing and humidity never reach the ink. The polyurethane resin is UV-stabilized, so unlike epoxy or plain vinyl it does not yellow, cloud or fade in direct sun. They are used on outdoor equipment, vehicles, boats and signage.
How long do durable domed labels last?
Outdoors, polyurethane domed labels typically stay clear, bonded and readable for many years; indoors, longer still. The limiting factor is usually the surface they are applied to rather than the label. We use 3M industrial adhesive for textured, powder-coated and low-energy plastic surfaces.
What is the difference between durable vinyl labels and domed labels?
A durable vinyl label relies on a thin laminate to protect the print; over time the laminate scratches, the edges lift and UV fades the color. A domed label adds a thick, slightly elastic polyurethane layer that absorbs impact, seals the edges and blocks UV. If a vinyl label has failed on your product, doming is usually the fix — at a similar price per piece in volume.
