Why Equipment Labels Fail — and Why Domed Labels Don't

Most equipment labels die from three things: sun, wash-down and abrasion. A polyurethane dome removes all three failure modes.

Sun & UV

Ordinary vinyl fades and laminates cloud. The UV-stabilized polyurethane dome keeps the print bright for years outdoors.

Wash-down & Chemicals

The print is fully encapsulated — pressure washing, oils, fuels, coolants and disinfectants never touch the ink.

Abrasion & Impact

The thick, slightly elastic dome absorbs knocks, tool contact and stone chips that scratch through flat labels.

Curved & Textured Housings

Flexible dome plus 3M high-tack adhesive bonds to powder-coat, cast housings and curved guards without rivets.

Temperature Cycling

Rated -40°F to 180°F — stays bonded and clear through freeze-thaw, engine heat and direct sun.

Edge Lift

The dome seals the label edge, the most common starting point for peeling on flat labels.

Equipment Labels FAQ

What are the most durable labels for equipment?

For equipment that lives outdoors, gets washed down or handles chemicals, a polyurethane-domed label is the most durable printed option. The print is fully encapsulated under a thick, clear resin dome, so water, UV, solvents and abrasion never reach the ink. Rated from -40°F to 180°F with 3M industrial adhesive, these labels routinely outlast the equipment they are applied to.

Do you make metal equipment labels?

Our equipment labels are polyurethane-domed polyester or vinyl, not stamped or anodized metal. In most equipment ID and branding uses they outperform metal plates: they conform to curved housings without rivets, never corrode, and the raised dome gives a premium finish. If your specification strictly requires engraved metal (for example a serialized rating plate under a regulatory standard), that is a different product — contact us and we will tell you honestly whether a domed label fits.

Are equipment labels waterproof and chemical resistant?

Yes. The polyurethane dome seals the printed surface completely, so the label is 100% waterproof and resists oils, fuels, cleaning agents and wipe-down disinfectants. The resin is UV-stabilized and will not yellow or crack like epoxy, which makes it suitable for outdoor equipment, marine gear, medical carts and industrial machinery.

Can equipment labels include serial numbers, model numbers or ratings?

Yes. Any printed content works — logos, model and part numbers, electrical ratings, safety marks, QR codes and contact details. Send your artwork as AI, EPS, PDF, PNG or JPG; we send a free digital proof before production. For variable serial numbers across a run, request a quote and we will set up the sequence.

What is the minimum order for equipment labels?

There is no minimum order. You can order a single prototype label or thousands; per-piece price drops steeply with volume — a typical 2-inch label runs roughly $2.45 each at 100 pieces and under $0.80 each at 1,000. Exact prices for your size and quantity are calculated instantly online. Production takes about 5 business days after proof approval, then ships to the US and Canada.

How do domed equipment labels compare to vinyl or laminated labels?

A plain vinyl or laminated label protects the print with a thin film that scratches, lifts at the edges and fades in sun. A domed label adds a thick, self-healing polyurethane layer that absorbs impact, sheds water and keeps its gloss for years. If a label has failed on your equipment before, doming is usually the fix.
